DALLAS — The Bishop Lynch football team found its spark in the second half of its home opener Friday night, but a strong offensive surge wasn't enough to overcome an early deficit as the Friars fell to Sutter Union, 49-28, at Roffino Stadium.
After a difficult opening week against Fort Worth Christian, Bishop Lynch showed significant improvement on both sides of the ball, particularly after halftime. The Friars scored 28 second-half points and finished the night with 435 total yards of offense, providing plenty of positives to build on heading into week three.
The receiving corps led the offensive charge, with Jeremiya Manning and Jake Blank turning in breakout performances. Manning hauled in seven passes for 107 yards and two touchdowns, while Blank caught five passes for 110 yards and a touchdown. The duo combined for 217 receiving yards and three touchdowns and were named the team's co-offensive players of the game.
Both MJ Haggan Jr. and Grayson Waldrop contributed at quarterback. Haggan threw for 142 yards and two touchdowns, while Waldrop added 121 passing yards and a touchdown through the air. Waldrop also found the end zone on the ground late in the game.
Bishop Lynch also found success on the ground, led by Lance Tinio's 69 yards on 10 carries. Senior Nicholas Dressell provided a spark in the second half, running hard for 40 yards on eight carries as the Friars continued to find their rhythm offensively.
Defensively, Greyson Boothe set the tone from his cornerback position. The Friar defender recorded a team-high five tackles and a pass breakup to earn defensive player of the game honors. Coleton Sanders also made an impact up front, recording four tackles, including two tackles for loss.
Special teams remained consistent throughout the night, with Caleb Maloud converting all four of his extra-point attempts.
While the Friars weren't able to complete the comeback, the second half provided a glimpse of what Bishop Lynch can be as the season progresses. With young players continuing to gain experience and the offense finding its rhythm, the Friars will look to carry the momentum from the second half into their third game of the season.
