Box Score DALLAS - Bishop Lynch traveled to Parish Episcopal and took it to the Panthers for a massive 3-1 district win on Thursday night.
Before the match began, Parish was tied for first in district with a 6-1 record, and the Friars were in third with a 5-2 record. Knowing that this was a must-win for BL to keep their goal of winning district, Coach
Shea Jenkins and the Friars came in with a businesslike attitude. Make no mistake, this was a business trip for the volleyball team, and when they left the gym on Thursday night, their business trip was a success.
Ashlyn Zilliken and
Leah Oyewole came out fast for the Friars on Thursday night as they led the team in kills in the first set, with Zilliken having four and Oyewole having three.
Lauryn Lambert,
Maddie Nolan and
Lyric Berry combined for eight kills to push the Friars over the Panthers 25-18 to take the crucial first set.
The Friars stayed hot in the second set, winning 25-15. Oyewole was perfect, literally; she had a perfect hitting percentage in the second set with a team-high five kills.
Rachel Vlk had her best set of the night as she assisted on 12 kills.
The Friars had a chance to put the match away in three as they had match-point on three different occasions, but the Panthers did not quit and took the third set 27-25. This set win for Parish energized the gymnasium, and the crowd could feel the momentum shifting. These set losses have haunted this Friar team in the past, but not on October 21st.
The fourth set was what everyone watching the game was expecting throughout the night. It was a back and forth game with excellent play on both sides of the court. The momentum shifted BL's way when the game was even at nine apiece, and the best point of the match happened. With 36 touches, 11 digs by seven players, and a point that lasted 43 seconds,
Ashlyn Zilliken finally ended it with one of her seven kills in the fourth set. The Friars never trailed after that point, and
Lauryn Lambert ended the game with a massive kill up the middle.
The offense played one of their best games of the year, with five attackers with 10+ kills being set up by Vlk and
Cate Hatfield, who combined for 55 assists. Lambert had another double-double on the night with 15 kills and 33 digs.
