ROUND ROCK - The Bishop Lynch volleyball team traveled to Round Rock to compete in the annual Volleypalooza tournament over the weekend. This tournament had a total of 68 teams, ranging from 6A to private schools. After three days of great competition, the Friars finished 7-2 and a final ranking of 11th overall.
BL opened up pool play on Thursday, ranked second in their pool and 24th overall. The Friars finished pool play undefeated, beating SA Johnson (2-0), Manvel (2-0) and Lovejoy (2-1) to advance to the higher bracket.
On Friday, the Friars found themselves in a three-team pool, this time with Cinco Ranch and Cypress Springs. They continued their hot streak and defeated Cinco Ranch 2-0. They then faced off against 6A Cypress Ranch out of Cypress, TX. The Friars fought hard but dropped the match in a very close third set. After the loss, they had to play in a play-in game to get into a higher bracket against Rouse High School. The Friars shook off the earlier defeat and beat Rouse 2-0 in an unbelievably close match, 26-24, 34-32.
Though the Friars weren't in the top bracket on Saturday, they still had a lot to play for. They started out the morning with a 2-0 victory over Barbers Hill. Then came local juggernaut Prosper. The Friars would struggle to get things going in the game and fall 2-0 to the 6A powerhouse. In the Friars' finale, they would take on Lake Travis and win 2-1 to close out a great showing at Volleypalooza.
The Friars finished 11th out of the 68 teams that participated in the tournament. They even defeated some of the teams that finished ahead of them. Prestonwood Christian Academy finished second overall. The Friars and Lions will open up district play against each other on September 13th in Plano.
Congratulations to
Lauryn Lambert, who earned the All-Tournament team for the second consecutive tournament. She has been the most consistent player for the Friars this season.
Leah Oyewole also hit a big milestone, as she got her 500th career kill over the weekend. Oyewole is verbally committed to playing volleyball next season at the Washington University in St. Louis!
Bishop Lynch will host DASche this Tuesday, August 29th. All levels will be playing so we look forward to seeing Friar Nation cheer on volleyball.
