Women's basketball advances to another final four with big wins over Incarnate Word and St. Agnes

COLLEGE STATION -- The women's basketball team won both their playoff games over the weekend and with their 57-44 victory over St. Agnes on Saturday, they punched their ticket to the TAPPS Final Four for the 38th time under Head Coach Andy Zihlman.

The Friars opened up their playoff campaign against the seventh seed from District 2, Incarnate Word out of Houston. The Friars jumped out to a 28-7 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. They wound up defeating the Falcons 74-27 behind Maddie Heiss' 18 points on 7-7 shooting. Natalie Cardenas was the only other Friar to reach double digits as the senior had 13 points and five steals.

After defeating IWA, the Friars matched up with St. Agnes, who defeated Prestonwood Christian Academy 53-48.

In the regional matchup, the Friars once again jumped out to a fast start, going up 22-12 after the first quarter. Ellery Sample made her presence known early and often, scoring 10 of the 22 points for BL.

The Friars' defense would tighten up in the second quarter, only allowing St. Agnes to score nine points, which led to the Friars having a 36-21 lead at the half.

The third quarter started great for our ladies, as Mikah Ford and Cardenas each hit their second three-pointer of the game, extending the lead to 19 points. After that though, St. Agnes fought back and got the score to 44-34 late in the third quarter. Cardenas and Heiss quickly went on a 4-point run as the quarter ended to make it 48-34 after three.

In the fourth quarter, the Friars weren't able to make many field goals. They were able to keep a double-digit lead with clutch free-throw shooting by Heiss, Cardenas and Bella Piccioni. When the clock hit 0:00, the Friars had a 57-44 advantage which secured their spot in the women's 6A Final Four.

The Friars are one of four teams from their district to make it to the final four. John Paul II, Nolan Catholic, Parish Episcopal and Bishop Lynch make up the final four teams. The Friars will face off against Parish Episcopal on Thursday, February 23rd in Waco. Bishop Lynch is 2-0 against the Panthers this season, with their most recent win coming on February 7th.
