Offensive woes lead to first district loss for the Friars

FORT WORTH, TX -- Bishop Lynch's 16 turnovers and 1-17 shooting from three led to their first district loss of the season on Tuesday night. Nolan Catholic defended their home court with a 63-54 victory over the Friars, which was a surprising outcome to many. BL had defeated Prestonwood by 28 in their previous district game, and Nolan lost to Prestonwood by 39 earlier this season.

Devin Miller was the bright spot for the Friars' offense as he finished with a team-high 15 points on 7-14 shooting. The senior also added four assists, four steals, and three rebounds. Davien Taylor saw himself start for the first time since late November and scored 12 points as he was the only other Friar to reach double digits. Taylor shook off some cobwebs but ended up with eight rebounds and two assists as well.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Friars jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the first quarter with quick buckets by Miller, but after a three-pointer from Nolan to make it 5-4, the Friars never saw the lead the rest of the contest. Miller had six of his 14 points in the first quarter and RJ Yttredahl scored the only other points for BL as they trailed 17-10 after one.

In the second quarter, the Friars had five players score with Ishmael Muhammad having the team-high with four. Overall, the Friars shot well in the quarter (6-13) and played their best defense holding Nolan to 5-14 shooting while having three blocks and two steals. What hurt them in the second quarter, and quite frankly the majority of the game, were the turnovers. BL had six alone in the second quarter which brought them to a 29-22 halftime deficit.

After a slow start to the third that created a 12-point lead for the Vikings, the Friars found some life. They pulled within one point at 38-37 with a couple of big buckets from Yttredahl and Rahim Glee. But Nolan continued to stay steady and would close the quarter strong to create 45-37 advantage heading into the fourth.

Miller and Taylor did their best to mount a comeback in the fourth, combining to score 11 points, but Nolan's methodical offense shot 6-8 from the field while taking a lot of time off the clock while doing so to keep the Friars at bay.
