Friars overwhelm Vikings, cruise to the road victory

FORT WORTH, TX -- The Bishop Lynch football team earned their second-straight TAPPS win Friday night as it secured a 42-17 road win over Nolan Catholic at Doskocil Stadium. This is the Friars' first road TAPPS win since they defeated John Paul II 28-16 1,130 days ago on September 17, 2021.

With the win, the Friars (4-3, 2-1) are off to their best start in league play since 2021 when they also started TAPPS play 2-1.

Matias Leon finished the evening 13-20 passing for 204 yards and accounted for four touchdowns - two passing and two rushing. Will Estes eclipsed 100 yards rushing for the third consecutive game as the senior ran for 116 yards and a touchdown. His score was his 10th touchdown on the season.

On the defensive end, William Patterson led the way as the junior racked up a career-high 13 tackles to go along with 2.0 tackles for loss and a sack. Alex Finley followed with a career-high 13 tackles, while Weston Pomykal matched a career-high with 11 tackles, including one for a loss. Drew Richardson matched Patterson for the team lead in tackles for loss with 2.0.

The Vikings (2-5, 0-3) took an early 7-0 lead, but the Friars rebounded quickly despite having two touchdowns called back. Leon's first rushing touchdown of the night tied the score at 7-7.
Later, Ty Bradley's powerful 28-yard catch-and-run gave Bishop Lynch a 14-7 lead with 2:51 left in the half. Following Alec Salazar's key interception, the Friars extended their lead to 21-7 with a 14-yard touchdown reception from Aiden McGinnis—his fourth touchdown of the season.

The score held at 21-7 going into halftime.

In the third quarter, Estes broke free for a 25-yard touchdown run, making it 28-7. The Friars' defense smothered the Viking offense, keeping them scoreless throughout the quarter and maintaining a 21-point cushion heading into the fourth.

Bishop Lynch added two more touchdowns in the final quarter: another rushing score from Leon and the first touchdown of the season for Ethan Perkins. On defense, Finley forced a fumble that Adan Fernandez recovered, setting up the Perkins touchdown.

Nolan Catholic added 10 points late in the fourth, but the Friars cruised to a decisive 42-17 victory.

Team Highlights
  • The Friars recorded six sacks, their highest total this season and the most since at least 2019.
  • The defense logged eight tackles for loss and has posted at least five tackles for loss in five games this year.
  • This victory over Nolan marks the 40th time Bishop Lynch has defeated the Vikings in football.
Individual Highlights
  • Alec Salazar's interception was his third of the season and second in consecutive games. He is the first Friar with three interceptions in a season since Josh Thornhill accomplished the feat in 2022.
  • Will Estes' 10th rushing touchdown this season places him alongside Isaiah Schmidtke ('22) and Godswill Giadolor ('24) as the only Friars with 10+ rushing touchdowns in a season since 2020.
