Friars show progress despite tough loss to Prestonwood

DALLAS, TX -- Bishop Lynch (2-3, 0-1) dropped its district opener to Prestonwood Christian (5-1, 2-0) with a 48-33 loss, but there was a different energy in Roffino Stadium. The Friars were competitive for all four quarters and going toe-to-toe with one of the top teams in the state, showing signs of growth that Friar Nation can be proud of.

Head Coach Brandon Moats, now in his fourth year, acknowledged the tough start. "Going down 14-0 isn't ideal, but the fight and willingness to do whatever it takes is there," said Moats. "We have to get better at starting fast, but I couldn't be more proud of our men's effort on Friday."

HOW IT HAPPENED:

1ST QUARTER | The Friars quickly found themselves in a 14-0 hole after a couple of early turnovers. But as we've seen all season, this team fights until the final whistle. Facing third-and-12 in what felt like a must-score possession, quarterback Matias Leon connected with William Estes on a perfectly executed screen pass for a 69-yard touchdown, narrowing the gap to 14-7. Though Prestonwood added another touchdown, the Friars began shifting the momentum.

2ND QUARTER | In the second quarter, Bishop Lynch's offense exploded. Leon threw for three touchdowns, including a perfectly placed corner route to Ty Bradley and a 23-yard strike to Aiden McGinnis who added another acrobatic catch to his resume. A 21-yard touchdown pass to Ismael Muhammad brought the Friars within four points, 31-27. Prestonwood responded with a quick two-minute drill, scoring just before halftime to make it 38-27.

3RD QUARTER | With a complete 180 from the first half, both defenses tightened up in the third quarter. Neither team managed to score, keeping the score at 38-27 heading into the pivotal fourth quarter.

4TH QUARTER | Prestonwood opened the fourth with a field goal, but the Friars answered with a 12-yard touchdown run by Leon—his fifth score of the night—cutting the deficit to one possession at 41-33 with just over five minutes left. Prestonwood sealed the game with a final touchdown, but the Friar defense continued to fight, holding the Lions out of the endzone and blocking a 30-yard field goal in the final minute.

SUB-VARSITY:
  • The Junior Varsity Black traveled to Plano and defeated Prestonwood 9-8 in a physical contest. The JV Black team now has a two-game winning streak and an overall record of 3-2, 1-0.
  • The Junior Varsity White continued their hot start to the year with a 34-8 home victory over Wylie. They improved to 4-1 on the season with a big game against John Paul II this week.

AROUND TAPPS:

Parish Episcopal (4-2, 2-0) defeated Nolan Catholic (2-4, 0-2), 62-13
Legacy Christian (4-1,1-1) defeated Trinity Christian (2-3, 0-1), 42-28
Liberty Christian (4-1, 1-0) defeated West Plains, 56-7

NEXT UP:
