Friars hold off Eagles to secure the Senior Night victory

DALLAS, TX -- Will Estes scored a career-high three touchdowns to power Bishop Lynch (3-3, 1-1) to a 28-24 victory over Legacy Christian (5-2, 1-2) last Friday. The win was especially meaningful as it came on Senior Night for the football team, band, brigade, and cheer programs.

Coming into the game, Legacy Christian had won 15 of its previous 18 games dating back to last year. The Friars, on the other hand, are still learning how to win close contests. Head Coach Brandon Moats addressed that with his team and, after the game, expressed pride in how his players responded under pressure.
"I talked with the team about how they held on against a great program," Moats said. "Beating a team that had won 15 of its last 18 games is a great start in the process of learning how to win."

Game Highlights:
  • Ty Bradley's touchdown in the first quarter was the senior wideout's 20th career touchdown reception.
  • With William Estes' three-touchdown game, the senior running back now has 10 touchdowns on the season - nine rushing and one receiving.
  • Alec Salazar's second-quarter interception was the senior's second of the season, and it turned into a pivotal seven points for the Friars.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

QUARTER 1
 | The Friars set the tone early, with Ishmael Muhammad opening the game with a big play. Although the offense stalled on their first possession, the defense responded. Captain Drew Richardson delivered a crucial stop on third-and-short to force an Eagles punt.

The Friars capitalized on their next drive as Matias Leon connected with Ty Bradley on a 30-yard double-move route, giving Bishop Lynch a 7-0 lead. The Eagles responded with a touchdown on their next drive, tying the game at 7-7 after the first quarter.

QUARTER 2 | Legacy Christian opened the second quarter with a promising drive and moved inside the Friar 30-yard line. But Alec Salazar came up with the first momentum-changing play of the game, intercepting a pass to halt the threat. The Friars took advantage of the turnover with a physical nine-play drive, capped by a six-yard touchdown run by Estes, making it 14-7.

Bishop Lynch had a chance to extend their lead after stopping a fake punt by Legacy, but a costly fumble in the end zone gave the ball back to the Eagles. Legacy took advantage, driving the field and tying the game at 14-14 with a short touchdown run just before halftime.

QUARTER 3 | The Friars defense came out strong to open the second half, forcing a three-and-out. The offense followed with another methodical, eight-play drive that ended with Estes' second touchdown, a 12-yard run to reclaim the lead, 21-14.

Legacy continued to battle and moved into a goal-to-go situation on their next possession. But the Friar defense stiffened, with Nick Payne breaking up a third-down pass in the end zone. The Eagles settled for a field goal, cutting the lead to 21-17 heading into the fourth quarter.

QUARTER 4 | Roffino Stadium witnessed one of the most thrilling fourth quarters in recent memory starting with Estes' third rushing touchdown of the night, extending the Friars' lead to 28-17 with 8:47 remaining.
Legacy immediately answered with a kickoff return touchdown, pulling within four points of the Friars, 28-24, and momentarily silencing the home crowd. The Friars seemed to have returned the favor with a kickoff return of their own by Gabe Nimmo, but a penalty nullified the score.

After the setback, the Friar offense went three-and-out, giving the Eagles a chance to take the lead just after BL had a two-possession lead. The Friar defense held firm once again. Weston Pomykal and Gabe Nimmo teamed up for a crucial stop on third down at midfield. Legacy's aggressive play-calling continued as they attempted a deep shot with a play-action pass on fourth down, but John Medaris stayed disciplined and broke up the pass, giving the Friars possession.

Bishop Lynch ran out most of the clock before turning the ball over to Legacy on their own 3-yard line with only 49 seconds left and no timeouts. The defense held strong to secure a 28-24 victory, giving the Friars their first district win of the season.

SUB-VARSITY:
  • The shorthanded Junior Varsity Black traveled to Frisco and fell in a tight game 33-23 to Legacy Christian. They will look to bounce back this Thursday as they will take on St. Mark's at 5:30 p.m. in Roffino Stadium.
  • The Junior Varsity White continued their dominant play as they shut out John Paul II 20-0 despite their own injuries. The team moves to 5-1 on the season as they will have a bye this week.
