HOUSTON, TX --
Baker Trent's 12 second-half points helped Bishop Lynch defeat The Village School 79-58 in the TAPPS Area Playoff Round. Team basketball was the theme for the Friars all afternoon as they fed off each other on both sides of the court.
The Friars' aggressive defensive style caused problems for the Vikings all afternoon. Not only did the home team shoot just 18-64 (28.1%) from the field, but they also committed 15 turnovers that led to 15 Friar points.
Nathan Day led the Friars with 15 points, while four Friars reached double-digit points yesterday afternoon. Trent finished with 12,
Jeremiah Williams had 12, and
Grady Norton had 11.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Playoff season means every minute counts as it could be your last game of the year. As the visitors, Bishop Lynch knew they needed to get off to a fast start and that is exactly what they did. They opened up the game with a beautifully drawn-up play that finished with a
William Schroeder dunk, energizing the entire team. The quarter ended with
Grady Norton's second three-pointer of the quarter to give the Friars a 20-8 edge after one.
RJ Yttredahl stepped up big in the second quarter as the Vikings were trying to inch their way back. The junior big man scored six straight points to help the Friars climb back to a double-digit advantage at 28-18. The Friars and Vikings would trade blows in the final few minutes of the first half to make the halftime score 38-28 in favor of the black and white.
The third quarter proved to be the most important quarter of the entire game for the Friars. Offensively, the Friars shot a decent 8-18 from the field, but defensively they held the Vikings to just 3-15 from the field. Trent and Day combined to score 11 points and the Friars doubled their halftime lead to take a 58-38 lead going into the final quarter.
Something that has hurt the Friars in recent games has been their free throws. In the fourth quarter yesterday, the Friars shot 12-16 from the charity strike to hold off any attempt at a comeback from the Vikings.
Jeremiah Williams (3-3),
Nathan Day (2-2),
Rahim Glee (2-2), and
Aiden Scholz (2-2) all went perfect from the line when they needed to, resulting in a 79-58 victory when the scoreboard hit 00:00.
