DALLAS, TX -- After being down as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter, the Friars had possession down by three with two seconds left but couldn't quite finish the comeback as they fell 64-61 to John Paul II last night.
Nathan Day scored a team-high 22 points and
Devin Miller added 15 points and seven rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In what is usually their best quarter, the Friars found themselves in an early hole trailing John Paul II 17-11 after the first quarter. The Friars went just 4-13 shooting in the first while having six turnovers leading to eight points for the Cardinals.
Jeremiah Williams was a big reason it wasn't more than a six-point deficit after the first as the sophomore had five of his 10 points in the first.
Devin Miller and
Davien Taylor got things going for the Friars in the second quarter as the team needed to crawl their way back. The backcourt tandem combined to go 5-6 in the second quarter for 11 points while also grabbing six rebounds and two assists. Despite the great play from Miller and Taylor, the Friars still found themselves in a 34-28 hole at the half.
Neither team played particularly great in the third quarter as both teams shot under 31% from the field and they both combined to commit nine turnovers. This led to the Cardinals improving their lead to 46-39 headed into the final frame.
Nathan Day did everything he could in the fourth quarter to give the Friars a chance in the end. The junior scored 16 of his 22 points in the fourth including hitting four three-pointers every time the Friars seemed to be out of it. Miller also had a big hand, literally, in the comeback as he was all over the court making it difficult for the Cardinals to set up their offense. He finished the game with four steals, three blocks, and nine deflections.
