Football's late rally comes up short in first appearance at the Catholic Bowl

FRISCO, TX --  Bishop Lynch (1-2) scored 21 fourth-quarter points but ultimately fell to out-of-state opponent Bishop McGuinness (2-1), 34-28, at the Catholic Bowl on Saturday. Entering the final quarter at The Star, the Friars were trailing 34-7. However, Bishop Lynch refused to back down, responding with three consecutive touchdowns. With just over a minute remaining, they lined up to attempt an onside kick to keep the rally alive. Unfortunately, the ball didn't bounce in the Friars' favor, and Bishop McGuinness was able to kneel out the clock, securing a six-point victory.

Aiden McGinnis and Will Estes were essential to Bishop Lynch's comeback attempt. McGinnis , who made one of the most impressive catches you'll see in the first half, finished with a career-high nine catches for 164 yards and two touchdowns. Will Estes also had a career night at The Star, as the senior rushed for 131 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries.

Defensively, Drew Richardson and Gabe Nimmo worked hard to slow down Bishop McGuinness' potent offense. Richardson finished with eight tackles and a sack. Nimmo was all over the field on Saturday, playing defense, offense, and special teams. He recorded eight tackles, rushed for 20 yards, helped convert a two-point conversion, had 41 return yards, and recovered the Friars' first onside kick attempt.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

1ST QUARTER
|  Bishop Lynch knew they needed to avoid self-inflicted errors to win this game. Unfortunately, after entering Irish territory, the Friars turned the ball over on their first two possessions, leading to a 7-0 advantage for Bishop McGuinness after the first quarter.

2ND QUARTER |  The visitors from Oklahoma extended their lead to 14 early in the second quarter and had all the momentum. That soon changed when the Friar defense made a goal-line stand with just over five minutes left in the half. Weston Pomykal deflected a pass, giving possession back to the Friars and a chance to make it a one-score game. Quarterback Armando Aguilera found a streaking Aiden McGinnis down the middle for a 79-yard touchdown, cutting the deficit to 14-7, which remained the halftime score.

3RD QUARTER |  The third quarter proved challenging for the Friars, as not much went their way. The Irish offense executed efficient drives, including a 68-yard touchdown on a double pass with 20 seconds left in the quarter, extending their lead to 34-7.

4TH QUARTER |  Down 27 points entering the final quarter, many teams might have thrown in the towel, but not the Friars under Head Coach Brandon Moats. They kept fighting, scoring two quick touchdowns—one from Estes and another from McGinnis—cutting the lead to 34-21 with 3:51 left.

After an onside kick by Eric Gonzalez was recovered by Gabe Nimmo, the Friars continued their comeback with a two-yard touchdown by Estes. Needing another successful onside kick, Gonzalez made a second attempt, but it was recovered by the Irish who then kneeled to close out the game.
