Friars Go Toe-to-Toe With Top-Ranked Prestonwood, Fall in Five Sets

DALLAS – The Bishop Lynch volleyball team dropped its second straight five-set thriller, falling to the three-time defending state champions Prestonwood Christian Academy on Tuesday night in the Competition Gym.

The matchup had the intensity of a 1990s heavyweight bout, with both teams trading blows throughout the back-and-forth contest. Junior captain Maia Raleigh delivered one of her best performances in the Black and White, recording a 32-assist, 20-dig double-double, while also tallying a career-high seven aces.

Prestonwood 3, Bishop Lynch 2 (18–25, 25–20, 19–25, 25–16, 15–12)

The Friars came out strong, jumping to a 7–4 lead behind key blocks from Maddie Sue Pflum and Kylie Love. They maintained that momentum and built a 20–12 advantage thanks to an excellent opening set from Charlie Wells, who led the way with three kills as Bishop Lynch took the first set, 25–18, and an early 1–0 lead.

The Lions responded in the second, showing why they've captured three straight state titles. Despite three kills from Love and two from Camila Figueroa, Prestonwood evened the match at 1–1 with a 25–20 win.

The third set saw Bishop Lynch regain control. Raleigh took over with four aces—including back-to-back serves to give the Friars a 19–16 lead—along with 10 assists and four digs in the set. Five Friars tallied at least two kills, and the Friars reclaimed the match lead with a 25–19 victory.

Facing elimination, Prestonwood responded with its most efficient offensive set of the night, recording a match-high 18 kills on a .319 hitting percentage to take the fourth, 25–16, and force a decisive fifth set.

The final frame was a test of endurance, as both teams fought for every point. Love paced the Friars with three kills, but the Lions narrowly edged out the win, outhitting Bishop Lynch .125 to .067 to take the set 15–12 and the match 3–2.
