Wrestling Narrowly Beats St. Thomas for Bishop Lynch's 107th State Championship

| By:
DALLAS, Texas — The Bishop Lynch wrestling program edged out St. Thomas and the rest of TAPPS Division I on Saturday to win the program's 18th state championship. This marks the second state championship for Bishop Lynch this week, following the swim team won on Wednesday.

Everything had to go right for the Friars, as they held off the Eagles (240 points) by just four points, securing the title with a total of 244. This championship was especially meaningful for the team, which boasts more than 20 seniors in the program.

"My seniors stepped up and were the difference today. I have cried four times already with these guys because I am so happy that I get to send them off to college with a state championship they earned in front of the home crowd," said Head Coach Tom Trautman. "I am incredibly thankful for my assistant coaches, Bryan Ashford and Hayden Malouf, who pour their hearts into these men and spend so much time teaching them how to be the right kind of men. This is special, and I will forever remember the look in those guys' eyes as we kept inching closer and closer before winning the title in the last match. Thank you, Bishop Lynch, for allowing me the opportunity to work with these amazing students and coaches."

The Friars were led by two standout wrestlers, Walker Walls and Maddox Preskitt. Walls has been a dominant force since his freshman year. The All-American continued his dominance, winning both of his matches by pin, including securing the 285-pound championship in just 34 seconds. Preskitt also encountered little resistance in the 132-pound bracket, winning all three of his matches by pin with times of 26, 46, and 21 seconds. Both Walls and Preskitt were voted Outstanding Wrestler of the Meet by coaches.

Maddox wasn't the only Preskitt to bring home gold for the Friars, as his younger brother, Kane Preskitt, shined in his TAPPS state championship debut. The freshman competed in the 106-pound bracket and won all three of his bouts—two by pin—and secured a dominant 16-0 victory in the semifinals.

The Friars had three additional wrestlers advance to the championship round but fell just short of individual state titles. JP Termulo (113 pounds), Aidan Rodriguez (120 pounds), and Seth Thibodeaux (126 pounds) all had outstanding performances, and without their contributions, Bishop Lynch may not have taken home the trophy.

With such a close and back-and-forth team battle, every point mattered. Wrestlers who lost early matches had to regroup and fight for third-place finishes to earn critical points. Coleman Gieselman (138 pounds), Pearce Roberts (144 pounds), Alec Salazar (157 pounds), Eli Aldridge (166 pounds), and Andrew Noack (175 pounds) did just that, ensuring the Friars stayed in contention.

"The legacy of Bishop Lynch Wrestling continues," elated Director of Athletics Alex Cantillo. "I can't express enough how proud I am of this team. Everyone sees how hard these student-athletes work day-in and day-out, and this is definitely the culmination of that hard work and passion poured into their craft. Thank you to Coach Trautman and our wrestling staff for their relentless dedication to the program, as this state title is a testament to their leadership and guidance."

Congratulations to all the student-athletes, coaches, fans, and administration on capturing the 2025 TAPPS Wrestling State Championship. The 107th Bishop Lynch state championship banner will forever belong to Kane Preskitt, JP Termulo, Aidan Rodriguez, Seth Thibodeaux, Maddox Preskitt, Coleman Gieselman, Pearce Roberts, Charlie DeVoss, Alec Salazar, Eli Aldridge, Andrew Noack, Welden Walls, Baker Hofland, and Walker Walls.
