Football Takes Care of Business, Defeats HSAA in Non-District Finale

DALLAS – Bishop Lynch closed out non-district play with a statement win, defeating the Home School Athletic Association 49-7 on Thursday night at Roffino Stadium.

The Friars (2-2) totaled 357 yards of offense, most of it in the first half before a running clock shortened the second. Quarterback Matias Leon led the way with 196 yards through the air, while Akani Cruz Berrios added 88 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. Senior wideout Ishmael Muhammad also broke through, hauling in five catches for 92 yards and his first touchdown of the season.

The defense was flying around and making big hits all night as the Friars registered 38 assisted tackles, two sacks, and an interception. Ethan Perkins grabbed his first interception of the year while also recording five passes defended. Luke Hammonds finished with seven tackles and three pass break-ups from his saftey position.

Special teams proved to be the difference-maker once again, as Bishop Lynch added two more scores in the return game. Freshman Zach Williams electrified the crowd with a 92-yard kickoff return touchdown, while Ethan Perkins zig-zagged his way to a 52-yard punt return score. The Friars' special teams unit has now accounted for four touchdowns this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

HSAA opened the game with the ball and managed one first down before punting. The Friars immediately answered, driving the field and capping the series with an impressive catch-and-run touchdown by Payne for a 7-0 lead after one quarter.

Bishop Lynch exploded in the second quarter, sparked by Cruz Berrios' back-to-back touchdown runs, including a 39-yard burst that stretched the lead to 21-0. After Leon's lone interception of the night set up HSAA's trick-play double pass for a score, the Friars quickly stole the momentum back as Williams returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to make it 28-7.

Muhammad added his first touchdown of the season late in the half, and Perkins closed out the second quarter with his highlight-reel punt return, sending Bishop Lynch into the break with a commanding 42-7 lead.

The Friars opened the second half with a crisp seven-play drive, capped off by Cruz Berrios' third touchdown of the night — a 17-yard run that extended the lead to 49-7. With the margin secure, the running clock went into effect, and Bishop Lynch coasted to its second win of the season.

UP NEXT
The Friars open TAPPS district play next Friday, Oct. 3, when they travel to Plano to face Prestonwood Christian. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Lions Stadium.
