Friar football's remarkable season ends in the semis

Box Score DALLAS - Bishop Lynch's outstanding season ended on Saturday night in front of a packed Roffino Stadium in the TAPPS Semi-Finals against Parish.

The final score would read 55-13, but the Friars showed heart and never quit throughout the game. Isaiah Schmidtke would have another special game, carrying the ball 15 times for 182 yards and two touchdowns. On defense, Webster Walls was all over the field, accumulating 13 total tackles throughout the night. When the clock hit zero, the Friars' season was over, but the beginning of a new era was only beginning.

This Bishop Lynch team, more importantly, this senior class, put the Friars back on the map this football season. After going winless last season and not advancing past the second round of the playoffs since 2018, they stepped up with new Head Coach Brandon Moats and lit a spark in this football program.

No one believed in this team this year. Many writers and news outlets repeatedly picked BL to lose games and not make the playoffs. Even when the Friars made the playoffs, many didn't believe we would win a game, let alone two, but this Friar team believed and proved many people wrong.

This senior class had a lot of responsibility this year. Helping a new, first-time varsity head coach, with not many players in the program, and they delivered. Not only did they lead on the field, but they were leaders in the classroom and around Bishop Lynch High School. Isaiah Schmidtke would repeatedly show up to root on the volleyball team and his fellow Friars while also being the Angelico House Captain and one of the brightest students at BL. Holt Chavez, who has to touch the ball every play on offense being center, would always be the first one to volunteer, like when he stayed after practice to collect baby supplies during a volleyball game earlier this year. These are just a couple of examples of this senior class of young men realizing how big of a role they have on campus. Thank you Justin Lawrence, Isaiah Schmidtke, Aguek Ajack, Joseph Lucas, Jeremiah Williams, Ethan Morrison, Juan Oliva, Austin Schnurr, Drew Nevitt, Kason McFadden, Ian Henderson, Beau Renteria, Webster Walls, Emmanuel Fernandez, Lucas Westbrook, Holt Chavez, Daniel Pedraza and Aiden Humason.

With many Juniors and underclassmen getting playing time this year in important roles and learning from the seniors, the future of the Friar Football program is headed in the right direction.

Congratulations to Coach Brandon Moats, his assistants and every student-athlete in the football program on a wonderful football season.
