DESOTO -- The Bishop Lynch women's basketball team started their 2022-23 season with a great win over Houston Legacy 59-31. This is the second straight year the Friars have been invited to play in the Fran Harris Tip Off Classic, and it is the second straight year the Friars have won their game.
Â
The women's basketball team returns many faces, but new players will have to step up with the departure of NCAA Division I players Maddie Cockrell and Ayen Angoi from the Class of 2022.
Natalie Cardenas has been a top scorer for the Friars for three years now and she showed that in her first game of her senior season. She led the game with 17 points, while also adding seven rebounds and six assists. Senior
Maddie Heiss, transfer from Highland Park, is a known point scorer and showed that in her debut in the black and white. Heiss finished with 16 points, five rebounds and three assists. Cardenas and Heiss will be a fun duo to watch this season, not only on the offensive side of the floor but also defensively as each had two steals in game one.
Â
Bella Piccioni is no stranger to the court and the senior had a great game shooting the ball against Legacy. She scored 13 points and went 5-7 from the field and 2-3 from deep. Freshman
Fre Vowels shined in her debut for the Friars, scoring nine points.
Â
Mikah Ford added six points for BL and
Meredith Morel and
Londyn Perry each had quality minutes.
Â
Two more Friars made their varsity debut against Legacy, senior
Ema Dunckova and freshman
Iyana Axson each got their first minutes playing varsity basketball.
