DALLAS - The Friars started the new year with a dazzling performance, defeating Nolan Catholic 61-43 to improve to 16-8, 2-0 on the season. The Lady Vikings were 2-0 in district play coming into the game and also looking for their 20th win of the season, but BL had other ideas.
After Nolan started the game by making a three-pointer, the Friars went on a 30-6 run and never looked back. At the half, the black and white held a 34-15 advantage. Leading the way in scoring at intermission were freshman
Fre Vowels and senior
Natalie Cardenas each with 10 points.
The second half was more of the same for the ladies, taking a 21-point lead into the fourth quarter. In the third quarter,
Ellery Sample took things into her own hands, scoring seven of her 17 points, including making her only three-point attempt.
When the game struck 0:00, Bishop Lynch had won 61-43 to improve to 2-0 in district play. Cardenas and Sample proved to be quite the duo. They combined for 36 points, 27 rebounds, seven assists, seven blocks and five steals in the Friars' district victory.
Vowels finished the game with 15 points and three assists. She has had to step up over the past few weeks due to injury and she is delivering. The freshman is averaging 13.5 points on a 51.9% effective field goal percentage over the past four games.
The women's basketball team went 1-2 in the Duncanville Sandra Meadows Tournament over the holiday break, defeating Mesquite Horn on a Cardenas' buzzer-beating three-pointer and losing to Midlothian and Bartlett (TN).
