DALLAS - The Bishop Lynch women's basketball team hosted the #1 ranked John Paul II Cardinals last Friday night in a battle of the unbeatens. The Cardinals proved to be too much for the Friars in their first matchup of the season as BL lost 54-38.
The Friars were without their top scorer of the season as
Maddie Heiss is recovering from an injury. Depsite missing out on her 15.7 points per game, the Friars came out to play from the tip on Friday night. Freshman
Fre Vowels, who has picked up her play due to Heiss' injury, had five points in the first quarter and the Friars had it level at 12 after the first eight minutes.
JPII took control of the game in the second quarter with their speed and size. The Cardinals outscored the Friars 18-4 in the second quarter and didn't allow the Friars to make a field goal. They also forced five turnovers for BL to their one, resulting in many easy baskets.
Even though the Friars were down by 14 points at the break, they did not shy away from the challenge at hand. Senior
Natalie Cardenas had her best quarter of the game in the third, scoring six of her nine points, including a three-pointer that brought the game to single digits at 36-27 with two minutes left in the third. The Friars outscored the Cardinals 13-10 in the quarter and were down 40-29 headed into the final eight minutes of the contest.
Much like the second quarter though, the Cardinals used their size and speed to wear down the short-handed Friars and walk away with the 54-38 victory.
