DALLAS -
Aiden Schnurr's game-winning shot rimed out Friday night as the Friars fell 58-57 to rival John Paul II in a packed Competition Gym. With the loss, Bishop Lynch's record is now 17-9, 1-2 on the season.
The Friars opened up the game with one of their best quarters of the season, thanks in big part to senior
Cole Milkereit who had one of his best games in a Friar uniform. Milkereit, who finished with a game-high 17 points, hit two threes in the first quarter helping the Friars get a 16-13 lead after the first eight minutes.
The Cardinals did not back down, as they fought back in the second quarter to take a 30-28 halftime lead. JPII hit three three-pointers in the second quarter alone to help them get the two-point halftime advantage.
The second half was a back-and-forth fight that had nine total lead changes. The Friars as a team shot 7-13 from the field in the third quarter, including 2-4 from three to cut the deficit to only one point going into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter started off with a bang as Schnurr hit a corner three to give the Friars the 48-46 lead. The Friars built up the lead to as many as four points in the fourth, but JPII kept fighting back. With the score tied at 52, Schnurr once again hit a clutch three-pointer to give the Friars a 55-52 lead with just under three minutes to go in the game.
The Cardinals followed that Schnurr three-pointer with a 4-0 run to retake the lead at 56-55 with just a little less than two minutes to go. After two empty possessions from each team,
Devin Miller had a great drive and pass to Milkereit for an easy basket to give BL a 57-56 lead with 30 seconds left in the game.
John Paul II called a timeout with 20 seconds left and drew up a play that resulted in a foul. The Cardinal player hit both FTs with 10 seconds to go to take a 58-57 lead.
After a Friar timeout, the coaches drew up a great play that resulted in a Schnurr finish near the basket that unfortunately didn't drop for the Friars.
Corey Webster got the offensive rebound and tried one more off-balance shot but neither fell and the Cardinals walked away with the win.
