Friars' 21-point fourth quarter propels women's basketball over Allen

DALLAS, TX -- The Bishop Lynch women's basketball team turned it on when they needed to the most in their 55-49 comeback victory over Allen High School on Tuesday night.

After missing the season's first game this past weekend, Mikah Ford showed why she will be a fun one to watch this season. The senior went 6-12 scoring with 15 points while grabbing three rebounds and dishing out two assists. She made her only three-point attempt in the fourth quarter when the Friars fell down 47-43 with just over 3:00 minutes remaining. After that three-pointer, Bishop Lynch closed the game on a 12-2 run to win the highly competitive game.

Alice Thackston and Fre Vowels were the other two Friars to score double-digits on the night, scoring 14 and 10 points. Iyana Axson was tremendous on the boards last night tallying a total of 13, nine defensive and four offensive.

This is a big victory early on in the season as the Friars lost to Allen last year 54-44.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Bishop Lynch came out excited in front of Friar Nation for the first time this season and quickly got the lead over the Eagles. With good looks and going a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line, the Friars took a two-point lead going into the second quarter 16-14. Ford scored eight of her 15 points in the first quarter on 3-5 shooting.

Thackston carried the offense for the Friars in the second quarter, scoring seven of BL's 10 second-quarter points while also securing three offensive rebounds. Defensively, BL's aggressive style led Allen to just 23.8 three-point shooting on the night, including going 0-4 in the second. The halftime advantage would go in favor of the home team 26-24.

The Eagles came out with something to prove in the third quarter as they were looking for their first win of the season. They took the lead in the third not necessarily with their shooting, but with their stingy defense as they stole the ball from BL three times in the quarter which led to five transition points. The Eagles took a one-point advantage heading into the final quarter.

One of the beautiful things about this Friar team is that you never know who will step up in crunch time. In last night's contest, it was senior Adriana Medina. Medina, who has been injury-prone her entire career, entered the 2023-24 season healthy. When the Friars started the fourth quarter down, she quickly changed the narrative of the game by opening up the quarter with a beautiful post-play move for a bucket only to follow that by making a corner three right in front of the Friar bench just 20 seconds later to give BL a 39-35 advantage. Those were Medina's only five points of the game.

Allen would fight back and as mentioned earlier took a 47-43 lead late in the fourth only for BL to rally back and get the home victory 55-49 in front of Friar Nation.
