DALLAS -- The Bishop Lynch baseball team could not have asked for a better start to their district campaign than their 12-2 road victory over Parish Episcopal last night. Senior captain
Brandon Bertsch got the start on the mound and the southpaw threw a three-hit complete game while striking out four.
Ben McLean led the way for the Friars at the plate as the junior went 1-3 with three RBIs including a solo home run to left field.
The game ended after five innings due to the 10-run lead the Friars had created. They did that by scoring in four of the five innings, including a six-run fifth inning. Bishop Lynch batters showed patience and poise at the plate all night, collecting seven hits, four walks and three hit-by-pitches.
Bishop Lynch led 1-0 after the first inning with an RBI groundout from McLean, which scored
Grayson Wise. In the second inning, it was Wise's turn to do the hitting as the junior speedster hit a two-run RBI triple to right field. This would make the score 3-0 in favor of the black and white and they wouldn't look back.
Bertsch was once again solid on the mound, only giving up three hits and three walks. His defense also played well behind him, with their biggest play coming in the bottom of the fifth to end the game. After striking out the first batter, Bertsch gave up a single and the Panthers had a man on first needing to score to extend the game. The Friar defense stepped up and
Xavier Perdomo,
Grayson Wise and
Sebastian Vasquez sealed the district victory with a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
Bertsch now has seven wins on the season, which is already tied for the fourth most in school history. The current record holder is Nick Halovanic who won 12 games in 2002.
Wise and
Alex Peredo led the game in hits with two each. Five Friars drove in runs - McLean (3), Wise (2), Vasquez (2), Perdomo (1) and Elrich (1). The three extra-base hits came from McLean (HR), Wise (3B) and Peredo (2B).
