DALLAS -- After
defeating Parish at their place last Tuesday, the Friars defeated the Panthers in their district home opener 11-9 in a thrilling game last Friday at The Mack.
The Friars' bats started off the game hot, scoring at least one run in each of the first four innings, including five in the bottom of the second. The five-run outburst in the second had a big deal to do with
Ben McLean's and
Alex Peredo's RBI doubles. McLean's was a nice hopper down the third baseline and Peredo's was a ground-rule double to right center.
Collectively, the Friars had nine hits and 10 RBIs with three extra-base hits.
Grayson Wise took advantage of the hot bats as the leadoff hitter got on base three times and scored a run every time he got to base.
Josh Thornhill - who has been flying under the radar all season - picked up two hits and scored three runs in the contest.
Sam Elrich got the start on the mound for the Friars and though he didn't have his best stuff, he got the outs when it mattered. In the first inning, Parish loaded up the bases with zero outs. Elrich proceeded to strike out two batters and get out of the inning without any damage. In the second inning, Parish once again had runners on the corners but Elrich got out of the inning with a fly ball.
When your pitchers don't have their best stuff, it is great to know that they can count on their teammates behind them. On two occasions, the Friars got a third out of the inning on an outfield assist. The first came in the fifth inning when
Luke Sokolovic threw out a runner trying to get a double. This ended an inning where the Panthers scored four runs and had momentum. The second came in the top of the sixth when Thornhill once again threw out a runner trying to get a double. On both occasions, it flipped the momentum back to the home team.
Though the Friars held leads of 8-0 and 11-4 the Panthers never quit and continued to fight until the last out of the game. After Elrich left the inning after 3.2 innings,
Alex Peredo came in for relief. Though he struggled at times with his command, the junior got the outs when he needed them and would close out the final 3.1 innings.
The Friars hosted neighborhood rival Bryan Adams over the weekend and defeated the Cougars 12-1.
Bishop Lynch is now 23-3 on the season and 2-0 in district play for the first time since 2020.
