Monroe's historic season finishes with a podium at state; multiple Friars walk away with hardware

ABILENE -- Colton Monroe had already broken every Bishop Lynch Powerlifting record and the Regional record in the squat this year, but he wasn't quite done as he entered the state meet this past weekend. Monroe not only set a new personal best and school record in the squat but the junior finished in third place.

Monroe was the only private school lifter to place at this year's state meet. To go with his PR 655lb squat, he had a 365lb bench and 550lb deadlift. He was in stiff competition, his 655lb squat finished second in his weight class - 181 lbs - with the champion squatting 700 lbs.

The junior's best lifts throughout his season gave him a total of 1,570 lbs on the year:
  • Squat - 650 lbs
  • Bench - 365 lbs
  • Deadlift - 555 lbs
Monroe wasn't the only Friar to walk away with hardware as Head Coach Bill Persinger was elected into the Texas High School Powerlifting Hall of Fame. Coach Persinger - or Coach P as he is more known - is most deserving of this accomplishment with the number of years he has coached young men and women in not only powerlifting and football but in life. From a former player of his, I want to say a big congratulations to a man who more than deserves this recognition.

Congratulations to both men on a fantastic state powerlifting meet and season.
