Softball wins extra-inning thriller over rival Ursuline

DALLAS -- The Bishop Lynch softball team defeated Ursuline Academy 12-9 yesterday in a thrilling back-and-forth 10-inning shootout at Ursuline. Faith Peterson's single on a 1-2 count in the top of the 10th scored the game-winning run. This victory improves the Friars' district record to 2-1 and their overall record to 7-13.

Mya Dunn and Megan Holter both hit solo home runs in the game. Both homeruns were when the Friars were down and needed to get back into the game. Dunn's homerun was a bomb to center field to bring the Friars within one run in the fourth inning. Holter used her speed for her homerun - her second in back-to-back games - as it was an inside-the-park homerun to tie the game at 7-7 in the sixth. Both Dunn and Holter didn't just get homeruns, the pair combined to go 6-10 with five runs scored, three RBIs, three stolen bases and two walks.

The offense was the key factor in the big district win as the team collected 12 hits and 12 RBIs. Peterson, along with teammates Brook Sheets and Brooklyn Duncan, had game-highs of three RBIs apiece.

Corina Hernandez started on the mound for the Friars and stayed there all 10 innings. Though she ran into trouble a few times throughout the game, she came up clutch when she needed to. In the eighth and ninth innings, she didn't allow a hit and only allowed one baserunner. She also struck out five batters, and because of a couple of errors, only allowed six earned runs.

BY THE NUMBERS:
.636 - Megan Holter's batting average in district play
5 - RBIs by Holter, Sheets and Peterson in district play
.372 - Team's batting average during district play
3 - Homeruns in district play this season - Friars had zero last year
