Men's golf finished runners-up at TAPPS State Tournament

WACO, TX -- The Bishop Lynch men's golf team had one of their best tournaments all season when it mattered most at the TAPPS State Tournament. With great play over two days, the men brought some hardware back to BL with a second-place finish.

The Friars beat out Parish Episcopal by 11 strokes to capture the silver while they fell to six-beat Trinity Christian Academy by 48 strokes. Billy Gordon finished first for the Friars, shooting 151 over the two days to finish in a tie for seventh place overall. Owen Sibley (154) finished 12th, Steel Wylie (155) finished 13th and Daniel Martinez (158) finished 17th.

Out of the eight teams competing at the state tournament, the Friars were the only team to only have four golfers. This makes their second-place finish even more incredible because teams can have more than four players, but they only take the top four scores.

With only four players, each player can't have a bad day because their score will be taken, which can be stressful but can also create opportunities for athletes to shine - which is exactly what the Friars did.

Wyile - who shot a career-low on the second day of regionals - decided to one-up that and shoot not only a new career low with a 75 on the second day of the state tournament. His 75 on day two also was the low for the BL squad.

Martinez also had a great overall tournament. On day one, he finished with five birdies - the team tournament high - which helped him be tied for 10th after the first day.

Gordon had himself a steady tournament, which resulted in a 75 & 76 on days one and two of the tournament. The lone junior finished with five birdies throughout the tournament.

Sibley, who has led the team all season, finished tied with Martinez with the most birdies in the tournament with seven. Though finishing in 12th wasn't his goal, finishing in second place is a great substitute for the senior.

Congratulations to these four student-athletes and head coach Barry Knott on an incredible season.
