Despite outgaining the Blue Raiders, Bishop Lynch falls in season opener to L.D. Bell

Bedford, TX -- The Bishop Lynch football team opened up their season against L.D. Bell at historic Pennington Field last Friday evening and fell to the Blue Raiders 36-14. Despite the loss, the Friars outgained and had more first downs than L.D. Bell.

The Friars couldn't have asked for a better start to the game as they received the opening kickoff and stormed down to inside the Raider 10-yard line. The big play on the drive was a Legend Howell to Ishmael Muhammad 27-yard throw and catch. Unfortunately, the drive ended when Howell got sacked and fumbled with the Red Raiders recovering.

Much like the first drive, the Friars' second drive led them into the red zone behind Patrick Washington's 30 receiving yards. But after a false start on fourth and three from the 19, the Friars failed to convert the fourth down attempt.

With the score at 7-0 L.D. Bell at the beginning of the second quarter, the Friar defense needed to come up with a stop to get the momentum back. After the Blue Raiders had driven it into BL territory, the Friars made their first two big defensive plays of the game. Jack Barnett and Gabe Nimmo came up with back-to-back sacks, forcing an L.D. Bell punt.

A late-quarter turnover inside their own 10-yard line was a killer for the Friars, setting up an easy touchdown for the Blue Raiders and creating a 22-0 deficit going into halftime despite playing well on both sides of the ball.

The third quarter saw continued great play from the Friars, on L.D. Bell's two drives. The lone drive for the Friars was an outstanding 16-play drive that got the Friars into the red zone for the third time in the game. Once again though, BL stalled as they didn't convert on fourth and seven from the 16-yard line.

The fourth quarter provided the most fireworks of the game, as both defenses seemed to be worn out from the heat and it was the season's first game. The Friars finally found the red zone at the beginning of the quarter when PJ Washington capped off a 12-play 71-yard drive with a nine-yard touchdown run, making it 22-7. Later, Will Estes had a 25-yard touchdown run.

Bishop Lynch outgained L.D. Bell 375 yards to 343 yards. The Friars also had more first downs with a 21-15 advantage.

Legend Howell had a great day through the air, throwing for 200 yards on 19-34. Godswill Giadolor was a workhorse throughout the game, surpassing the century mark as the senior running back finished with 102 yards on 23 carries. All of this was made possible by the outstanding offensive line play from Seb Yervasi, Luis Moreno, Haden Chavez, Diego Chavez and Cooper Timmons.

Kobie Moreland's performance may have been a surprise to many, except the players in the locker room. The sophomore wideout finished the game with six catches and 58 yards. PJ Washington also had a great game as the senior playmaker finished with 70 total yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, the Friars played hard from start to finish. Jordan Hooks, who moved from offensive line to defensive line this offseason, was a difference maker on the line of scrimmage. The senior finished with four tackles and one tackle for loss. Another offense to the defensive switch was Gabe Nimmo who played wide receiver and moved to safety this year. The junior finished the game with six tackles, including a sack.
