DALLAS, TX -- After winning her freshman season,
Brianna Murphy defended her title at the district tournament this week with great success. Murphy advanced all the way to the championship match but fell to top-seed Erin Gan-Dy 6-0, 6-1 from Ursuline Academy to finish as the district runner-up.
Murphy wasn't the only Friar to make waves at the district tournament as her teammate,
Alex Gardsbane, advanced to the semi-finals with two wins on day one. Unfortunately, Gardsbane dropped her semi-final match to Gan-Dy and fell in the third place match to Yael Modrykamien from Parish Episcopal to finish in fourth place. With the fourth place finish, she will join Murphy at the state tournament.
On the men's side
Cole Krueger finished sixth overall to punch his ticket to state. Krueger won his first match 7-6 (4), 6-0 over Rafa Garcia on day one, and on day two had a big 6-3, 6-3 victory over Trinity Christian's Jackson Dean to play in the fifth place match.
Not only did these three great student-athletes advance to the state tournament, but
Alex Gardsbane also received a special award for her play. Every tournament, teams nominate a player for the Sportsmanship Award and then coaches vote for the winner. In this tournament, Gardsbane was bestowed the award for her great display of sportsmanship, integrity, and fair play throughout the two-day tournament.
