Krueger headlines district meet as four Friars qualify for state

PLANO, Texas -- Bishop Lynch sophomore Cole Krueger made a statement at the TAPPS district tennis tournament on Monday, finishing as the runner-up and earning a trip to the state championship. Seeded No. 3, Krueger opened with a first-round victory before pulling off an impressive upset over No. 2 seed Qian from John Paul II in a grueling 6-3, 6-7, 7-2 battle to reach the district title match. Though he fell short in the championship, his runner-up finish is a tremendous achievement, and he will now set his sights on competing for a state title in two weeks. 

The men's doubles team of Alejandro Kolster-Passos and Saoirse Langford battled through a competitive tournament to punch their ticket to the state meet. The duo started strong with a first-round victory before facing a grueling semifinal match that stretched to a third-set tiebreaker, where they fell just short, 6-4, 6-7, 10-8. Despite a tough loss in the third-place match, their overall performance secured them a spot at state, highlighting their resilience and determination on the court.

Alex Gardsbane showcased grit on her path to a third consecutive state tournament appearance. As the No. 2 seed, she earned a first-round bye before claiming a commanding 6-4, 6-1 victory in her opening match. In the semifinals, she battled through a tight contest but fell 7-6, 6-4. The third-place match tested her resilience as she rallied from a 4-0 first-set loss to force a decisive third, ultimately falling in a 10-7 tiebreaker. Facing a must-win match against Valadez from John Paul II for a state berth, Gardsbane regained her composure and delivered a dominant 4-2, 4-0 victory, securing her spot at state once again.

Congratulations to the four state finalists on the Bishop Lynch tennis team. The TAPPS State Tennis Tournament will be held on April 7 and 8 at the Waco Regional Tennis Center in Waco, TX.
