Ellman Captures District Title as Friars Send Five to State

PLANO — Despite a lengthy weather delay at the TAPPS District II Tennis Tournament, freshman Ethan Ellman kept his composure and delivered a championship performance, defeating No. 1 seed Jacobs of John Paul II, 7-6, 6-2, to capture the TAPPS District II men's singles title last Friday at the East Sports Complex.

Ellman advanced to the championship with straight-set victories over Prestonwood's Gray (6-1, 6-0) and John Paul II's Qian (6-4, 6-1). After dropping two tightly contested matches to Jacobs during the regular season, the freshman flipped the script when it mattered most. He edged out a back-and-forth first set in a tiebreak before cruising to a 6-2 win in the second to secure the district crown and a berth in the state tournament.

Ellman wasn't the only Friar to shine on the court. Alex Gardsbane and Cole Krueger also qualified for state in singles play, while the doubles team of Saoirse Langford and Christian Williamson earned a spot in the men's doubles bracket.

Gardsbane advanced to the championship match with impressive wins over John Paul II's Maurer (6-0, 6-1) and Ursuline's Brauer (6-4, 6-4). She ultimately fell to top-seeded Gan-Dy of Ursuline, 6-0, 6-0, to finish as the TAPPS District II runner-up.

Krueger opened with a strong 6-2, 6-1 victory over Prestonwood's Roberts before falling to Jacobs in the semifinals. He responded with a gritty performance in the third-place match, defeating Qian 4-1, 5-3 to secure a third-place finish and a state tournament berth.

In doubles play, Langford and Williamson earned the final qualifying spot in dramatic fashion, defeating fellow Friars Alejandro Kolster Passos and Henry Sullivan in the fourth-place match, 4-1, 4-0. The win secured their place at state in a bittersweet all-Bishop Lynch matchup.
