Friars Flip the Script on the Cardinals, Remain Undefeated in District Play

DALLAS — Trailing at halftime, the Bishop Lynch men's soccer team erupted for four second-half goals to earn a 4–1 victory over John Paul II on Tuesday night at Roffino Stadium. The win keeps the Friars unbeaten in district play and snapped a three-match losing streak against the Cardinals.

Goals (Assists)
45' Bishop Lynch — Asher Harbison (Jack DeSmeth)
56' Bishop Lynch — Jack DeSmeth (Geovany Flores)
61' Bishop Lynch — Jack DeSmeth (Raphael Reagins)
72' Bishop Lynch — Moises Bernabe (Nate Nammari)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Fresh off a dramatic district-opening win over Legacy Christian, the Friars entered Tuesday's match with confidence, but John Paul II played the role of spoiler early. The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead into halftime, limiting Bishop Lynch's chances and disrupting their rhythm throughout the opening 40 minutes.

That all changed after the break.

Just five minutes into the second half, Bishop Lynch capitalized on a corner kick. Jack DeSmeth delivered a perfect ball into the box, where Asher Harbison rose up and powered home a header to level the match at 1-1.

DeSmeth wasn't finished. Eleven minutes later, the junior gave the Friars the lead, redirecting a cross from Geovany Flores past the keeper with his head to make it 2-1. Five minutes after that, DeSmeth struck again, unleashing a rocket from 20 yards out to extend the lead to 3-1 with just under 20 minutes remaining.

The Friars put an exclamation point on their dominant second half when Moises Bernabe finished off a one-touch effort inside the box to make it 4-1 late in the match, sealing a convincing district victory.

POST MATCH NOTES:
  • Bishop Lynch improves to 6–10 all-time against John Paul II since 2019.

  • Bishop Lynch has started district play 2–0 for the first time since the 2019–2020 season.
  • Head Coach Stewart Brown earned the 299th win of his career with the victory.
