Thriller ends in penalty kicks as Friars fall to Ursuline

DALLAS — In a rematch of last year's TAPPS Semifinals, the Bishop Lynch women's soccer team hosted Ursuline Academy on Tuesday night at Roffino Stadium. In one of the most intense regular-season matchups of the year, the Bears edged the Friars 3-1 in penalty kicks after the teams battled to a 1-1 draw through regulation and overtime.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

After 30 minutes of physical, back-and-forth play, Ursuline struck first on a counterattack. The visiting Bears carried the 1-0 advantage into halftime. Despite the deficit, the Friars entered the break with confidence after controlling much of the first half and generating several quality scoring chances.

The second half remained evenly contested, but with 20 minutes remaining, Bishop Lynch found the equalizer it was searching for. Following a throw-in near midfield, Madison Murphy surveyed the field and delivered a perfectly weighted ball over the Ursuline back line to a streaking Mila Van Loggerenberg. The freshman calmly controlled the pass and slotted a left-footed strike past the keeper to tie the match at 1-1.

The Friars pushed for a winner late in regulation, creating multiple chances and earning several corner kicks, but neither side could break through. After a thrilling 80 minutes, the rivals remained deadlocked and advanced to two five-minute overtime periods. With no goals scored in extra time, the match was decided by penalty kicks, where Ursuline converted three to secure the win.

  • Bishop Lynch's record against Ursuline since 2019 stands at 2-15. 
  • Van Loggerenberg now has three goals on the season, tied for second-most on the team. 
  • Murphy recorded her team-high fifth assist of the year. 
NEXT UP:
The Friars return to Roffino Stadium next week to host Prestonwood Christian on Tuesday, January 27. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., and the match will serve as Senior Night with a pre-match ceremony honoring the program's seniors.
