Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | BLHS Sports Information

Defense proves to be the difference-maker in the Friars' victory over Prestonwood

PLANO -- The women's basketball team opened up district play on the road for the first time since 2019-2020 last night when they traveled to Prestonwood Christian Academy and defeated the Lions 69-47.

The game plan was simple, press after every basket and surround the ball and the ladies wearing all black did exactly that. In the first quarter alone, the Friars forced 15 turnovers. Those 15 turnovers led to 22 of BL's 29 points in the first quarter. After just eight minutes the Friars led 29-4 and it felt like the game was all but wrapped up. Bishop Lynch wound up forcing 32 total turnovers.

Natalie Cardenas and Maddie Heiss were dominant from the start and a big help in forcing all the early turnovers. The two super seniors combined for 20 of the Friars' 29 points in the first quarter and shot a combined 8-13. Heiss finished with a game-high of 21 points while Cardenas had 12 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and a plus/minus of +33.

The Friars' bench played one of its best games of the season, scoring 19 total points. That charge was led by freshman Iyana Axson who tied a career-high with eight points and grabbed three rebounds.

Mikah Ford is Bishop Lynch's energizer bunny as she goes 110% every time she is on the court. Ford had a great game Tuesday night and helped the Friars jump out to an early lead. She had four points and two steals in the first quarter and finished with eight points and four steals.

Ellery Sample finished with six points and six rebounds in only 16 minutes of playing time. The junior center got valuable rest in the second half, but when she was in the game, she was a huge difference-maker inside the paint.

Sub-Varsity:
The junior varsity defeated Prestonwood 61-43 to improve to 6-10, 1-0 on the season.

Next Up:
The Friars travel to Argyle to take on Liberty Christian in a non-district matchup. The Friars do not return to district play until January 3rd.
