CROWLEY -- The Bishop Lynch baseball team continued their great start to the season by reaching the championship game of the Private School Classic over the weekend. The team lost in the championship to a great Southwest Christian team 6-1, but before that tallied up four wins by a combined score of 37-8.
The Friars opened up the tournament with a 14-5 victory over Bishop Dunne on Thursday, their second win over our former rival this season. In the 14-5 win,
Josh Thornhill was credited with the win, pitching 2.0 innings and striking out one. The Friars won the game with their bats though, with 13 of their 14 runs coming off RBIs. Five Friars recorded extra-base hits, including two triples from
Ryder Bunfill and
Alex Peredo. Though the junior didn't record an extra-base hit,
Ben McLean went 3-4 with three RBIs to lead BL.
After a dominant win on Thursday, the Friars had two shutout wins on Friday, 12-0 over Savio and 7-0 over Fort Worth Christian. In the 12-0 game against Savio,
Aaron Reeves got the win by throwing 3.0 scoreless innings.
Grayson Wise continued his hot start to the season at the plate, going 2-4 with a triple and three RBIs.
The 7-0 victory over Fort Worth Christian was at the arm of
Sam Elrich, the sophomore pitcher who threw 7.0 scoreless innings while only giving up two hits and striking out six. McLean and
Luke Sokolovic each added two RBIs.
The semi-final game on Saturday was against Cornerstone Christian. The seven-inning game was a tight one that saw the Friars never trail. Senior
Brandon Bertsch started on the mound and got his third win of the season, pitching 6.0 innings and striking out nine batters. RBIs for the Friars came off the bats of Sokolovic, Bunfill and
Will Maya. Cornerstone tried to come back in the top of the seventh and scored one run, but
Cash Carpenter struck out the final batter to help the Friars advance to the championship game.
The Friars faced off against Southwest Christian in the championship game, a team BL defeated earlier this season 4-3. This go-around, Southwest Christian had the upper hand, defeating the Friars 6-1.
The Friars should be very proud of how they played over the action-packed weekend and how they have started out the 2023 season.
