Bishop Lynch High School (TAPPS 1-District 1) will host its third home game of 2023, this week against Liberty Christian (TAPPS 2-District 1), at 7:00 p.m. tonight in Roffino Stadium. The Friars (1-3, 0-0) are coming off a tough defeat by Dallas Christian last week 41-28. Liberty Christian (3-0, 0-0) continued to roll with a 56-3 victory over Grapevine Faith last week.
2023 Common Opponents:
The Friars and the Warriors share a few opponents this season. Liberty Christian defeated Prestonwood in week one 48-19 and they also play Midland Christian on October 13. BL will play Midland Christian next week and later in the season will take on Prestonwood on October 20.
History:
Bishop Lynch and Liberty Christian have met 12 times on the gridiron. The Warriors hold a 9-3 advantage despite the Friars winning three of the last five games. Last season, Liberty Christian defeated BL 43-14 and you can read that recap
here.
Players to Watch:
Liberty Christian:
#11 Cole Welliver: Welliver is a three-star quarterback prospect who is verbally committed to the University of Connecticut. In week one against Prestonwood, the senior threw for 307 yards and four touchdowns while completing 71% of his passes.
#10 Brady Janusek: He seems to be Welliver's favorite target so far this season. In the game against PCA, Janusek recorded five catches for 145 yards and two touchdowns. He is also a great baseball player as he is committed to playing baseball at the University of Oklahoma next season.
Bishop Lynch:
#3 PJ Washington: The dynamic wide receiver has been used in nearly every facet of the game this season. He has caught 17 passes, rushed seven times, and returned punts and kicks while scoring four touchdowns this season.
#12
Drew Richardson: The junior outside linebacker is fourth on the team in tackles but leads the Friars sacks with 2.5. It will be vital to put pressure on the Liberty quarterback this Friday night as he is keen to throw interceptions.
Keys to the Game:
Liberty Christian: They most likely won't change too much on offense as they have put up an average of 45 points per game. Their defense has been stout all year, only giving up 7.3 points per game. They haven't faced an offense with the firepower of BL but if they can slow down the Friars they will feel comfortable in the fourth quarter.
Bishop Lynch: This very well may be the best team Bishop Lynch faces for the rest of their season, and may be their toughest opponent so far. They will need to continue scoring at a high rate but will somehow need to create more possessions for the offense. If the Friars can force a couple of turnovers and punts, the men in black may shock DFW tonight.
