FORT WORTH --
Kyle May took over the Bishop Lynch men's basketball program in the 2013-14 season. Now, in 2023, after ten years of being at the helm and seven straight winning seasons, May is the winningest men's basketball coach in school history.
Bishop Lynch capped off a great night for both basketball programs with a 60-45 victory over Nolan Catholic. Every starter scored in double digits for the first time all season and was led by juniors
Devin Miller and
Baker Trent, whom each had 11 points.
The Friars had found themselves on a two-game district losing streak when they headed to Fort Worth to take on Nolan Catholic. It is always difficult to play out west and BL knew they would have to execute at a high level to get the road victory.
This game followed a similar path as the first contest back onÂ
January 3rd. After a low-scoring first quarter where the Friars only mustered up eight points, BL outscored the Vikings by 12 points in the second quarter to take the halftime lead, which was the exact same way the first contest happened.
To make it even wilder, in the first matchup,
Aiden Schnurr made a three-pointer at the buzzer to go into halftime
. On
Friday night, the senior made a buzzer-beating put-back to go into halftime.
The Friars' 31-21 halftime lead had a lot to do with their defense. The men in black forced Nolan to 14 first-half turnovers. Miller forced five of those turnovers with great instincts. He finished the game with an amazing eight steals. Miller's length and athleticism have helped the Friars become a top-10 defense in DFW this season.
Â
Bishop Lynch pulled away in the third quarter, continuing to play hard defensively and holding the Vikings to just eight points in the third quarter.
Hayden Bauer had another great game down low, grabbing eight rebounds and having 10 points in the paint on 5-5 shooting.
Nathan Day might have had the best game of his young career. The sophomore scored five points off the bench and grabbed three rebounds and had three steals.
