Box Score COLLEGE STATION -- The Bishop Lynch men's basketball team's season came to an end over the weekend when they fell to the number one-seeded Prestonwood Christian Lions 70-51. The reason they were playing in the regionals was because of their big 80-62 win over Concordia Lutheran in the area playoff the day before.
The Friars were the fifth seed from District-1 and Concordia was the fourth seed from District 2 so on paper the Crusaders were the favorite. The Friars quickly proved that it was going to be a different story on the court Friday night as the men jumped out to a 5-0 lead and never looked back.
The narrative of the victory was different starters taking over at different times of the game. The first quarter went to
Cole Milkereit, who had a sequence of back-to-back threes with a big block that helped the Friars go from trailing 9-7 to up 13-9. Milkereit would continue his good first quarter and be the first Friar to double digits with four early points at the beginning of the second quarter.
Concordia fought back in the second quarter, and with 3:43 left in the half actually took the lead 26-24. That is when senior
Aiden Schnurr had a sequence of a three-pointer and a runner in the paint to help the Friars retake the lead. After retaking the lead,
Corey Webster finished the half spectacularly, scoring the final seven points for BL with his last bucket being a three to make it 41-30 at the half.
Webster had one of his best games in the first half, as he led the team with 12 points with Milkereit right behind him with 10.
The start of the second half could not have gone any better for the Friars. Capped off by a Schnurr three-pointer, BL started the half on a 16-3 run that gave them a 56-33 advantage.
Devin Miller closed out the third quarter strong, making a couple of acrobatic layups to give the Friars a 19-point advantage after three quarters. Miller and Schnurr each hit double-digits in the third quarter to make four of the five starters with double digits - the second time all year the men's team has done that.
Miller started the fourth quarter just as he ended the third, and by himself scored 12 straight points for BL. Concordia fought back and with under four minutes to go had some momentum and were only down 14 points when Schnurr put the final nail in the coffin by hitting a three-pointer, his third of the game, to make it 72-55.
The Friars would hold on and defeat Concordia 80-62, the second most points they had scored in any game all season.
In the Prestonwood game the following day, shots weren't falling for the Friars in the first half and the Lions built a big lead at the half, 31-17. The men wearing black showed no quit all the way through the final buzzer. Schnurr led the way for the Friars with 12 points on four made three-pointers.
The Friars finished the season with a 20-15 record, the program's seventh straight season with 20+ wins, and Head Coach
Kyle May's eighth time his team has won 20 or more games in his 10 years at the helm.
Congratulations to the entire men's basketball program on a fantastic 2022-2023 season. All four programs combined for 74 wins, nine more than they did in 2021-2022.
