Friars Finish the Sweep Over John Paul II

DALLAS — The Bishop Lynch women's soccer team completed the season sweep of John Paul II with a 2-0 victory over the Cardinals on Monday night at Roffino Stadium. Goals from Mila Van Loggerenberg and Madison Murphy propelled the Friars to 3-1 in district play.

Since falling to John Paul II in the 2022–2023 TAPPS Semifinals, Bishop Lynch has won six straight matches against the Cardinals, completing season sweeps in three consecutive years.

78' Bishop Lynch - Madison Murphy (Mila Van Loggerenberg)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

As is often the case in district matchups, both teams spent the opening minutes settling into the match before Bishop Lynch struck first in the 18th minute.

The play began with Serenity Collins winning a key header in the midfield, springing Madison Murphy into space. Murphy's initial effort was turned aside, but it forced the Cardinal back line to scramble. On the ensuing clearance, Collins again won the ball in the air and found Leticia Arellano, who calmly worked it to Van Loggerenberg on the right side.

The freshman took a touch, cut inside, and unleashed a left-footed rocket over the defense and past the keeper to give the Friars a 1-0 advantage — a lead they would carry into halftime.

John Paul II came out aggressively in the second half, but Brianna Rosales and the Friar back line stood firm, denying every scoring opportunity the visitors created.

Despite generating several chances, Bishop Lynch finally put the match away late. With just over two minutes remaining, Murphy finished a corner kick opportunity to make it 2-0, with Van Loggerenberg picking up the assist to cap off a strong all-around performance.

POST MATCH NOTES:
  • Bishop Lynch has won six straight matches against John Paul II, improving to 8-7 in the series since 2019.
  • Van Loggerenberg has now scored in back-to-back matches for the first time in her career and ranks second on the team with four goals this season.
  • Murphy recorded her team-high eighth goal of the year.
NEXT UP:
The Friars travel to Moser Field on Thursday, February 5, for a rematch against Ursuline Academy. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The Bears defeated Bishop Lynch earlier this season in penalty kicks.
